Hamstring Injury

Hamstring InjuryPhysiotherapy for Hamstring Injuries

Hamstring injuries are extremely common sporting injuries. They most commonly are injured during a quick acceleration of speed, although they can also occur as an overuse injury or from a blow to the leg. A hamstring injury is usually very sudden and painful. Depending of the severity of the injury there may also be pain on walking or going upstairs, bruising, swelling and loss of strength. Early treatment of a hamstring injury is advisable. Treatment will focus on controlling the swelling and bruising through the use of ice and compression, facilitating the regeneration of new tissue through electrotherapy modalities and soft tissue mobilisation and the provision of a sports specific rehabilitation programme to return the athlete to their sport. The rehabilitation programme will also address any muscle imbalances identified which may have been a predisposing factor in the injury, thereby limiting the risk of reoccurrence.
